Walker Drive neighbourhood watch nabs cable thief

AfriForum’s Walker Drive neighbourhood watch nabbed a suspected cable thief on 18 August and handed him to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for arrest. This come after neighbourhood watch patrollers spotted a suspicious person. After further investigation, it was established that this person was stealing cables. The tools and the cut cable were found on the scene.

“Incidents of cable theft and vandalism increase more and more, especially during load shedding. Therefore, this is a great success for AfriForum’s Walker Drive neighbourhood watch and the Sherwood community. We thank every AfriForum and neighbourhood watch member for their selfless contribution and time to keep our community safe. We also thank the SAPS and private security companies, who were quickly on the scene to help after being contacted,” says Wikus van der Walt, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Eastern Cape.

“Thanks to the patrollers’ quick actions and because they contacted the relevant role players, the suspect could successfully be arrested. That is why community members must join their local AfriForum neighbourhood watch,” says Hannes Oosthuizen, leader of AfriForum’s Walker Drive neighbourhood watch.

“Cable theft causes enormous financial losses and destroys infrastructure, which is a major concern for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and its taxpayers. Crime can be curbed when communities and local authorities work together,” concludes Van der Walt.
