SUCCESS: TMPD officials who pulled over Kymie du Toit prosecuted
The officials of the Tswane Metro Police Department who pulled Kymie du Toit over in December 2019 in Pretoria will be prosecuted on charges of assault in the Hatfield Magistrates Court. The docket was transferred to this court yesterday and the suspects will now be subpoenaed after a court date has been determined. This follows after AfriForum announced in 2020 that the Private Prosecution Unit would assist Du Toit with the criminal charges she had laid against the officials who were purportedly involved.
According to adv. Gerrie Nel, Head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, the video footage of the incident in 2019 made headlines because institutions such as the metro-police and the SAPS exist with the goal of protecting the citizenry, but some officials seem to be doing exactly the opposite. “Officials who seem to be abusing their power must be held accountable. The Private Prosecution Unit will therefore continue to support Kymie by monitoring the court proceedings and ensuring that justice is done. We will not tire in our duty to ensure that the criminal justice system is functioning properly.”
“Society cannot afford that law enforcement officials, who are supposed to be enforcing the law, break the law at the expense of normal, law-abiding citizens. When a woman who is driving alone at night is terrified of being pulled over by the traffic police, it is an indictment against society’s trust in the bona fides of their intentions.
