AfriForum neighbourhood watches help at crime and accident scenes during mass patrol

The AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Moreleta Park in Pretoria responded to a shooting incident on Friday evening (April 19) in which a female victim was seriously injured. She received a food delivery outside her home at the time of the incident. The woman was hospitalised after suffering two gunshot wounds to her stomach. With AfriForum’s arrival on the scene, two suspects have already been arrested. The local AfriForum neighbourhood watch members then combed the area for a third suspect.

In Brakpan on the East Rand, AfriForum neighbourhood watch members helped a private security company to arrest a suspect who is connected to murder and rape.

Both of these incidents took place during AfriForum’s first national mass patrol for 2024.

AfriForum’s 177 neighbourhood and farm watch structures participated in this mass patrol. This action forms part of AfriForum’s national safety strategy, where volunteers in this organisation’s safety structures take responsibility for safety in their own communities.

Several of AfriForum’s Pretoria-based neighbourhood watches started their patrols at the SolTech campus in Monument Park. The activities were also broadcasted live on Facebook.

Members from across the country participated in patrols in their own communities and responded to various crime incidents. Neighbourhood watches in Pretoria and Bronkhorstspruit have focused their patrols on the N4 highway and other roads that have become notorious for spike traps.

Neighbourhood watches nationwide also provided support at various accident scenes.

“The enormous role these volunteers play in helping to secure their communities cannot be underestimated. AfriForum will continue to expand its security structures and increase the quality of security training to its growing number of patrollers. The solution to the enormous crime problem in the country lies in well-organised and trained communities,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s chief spokesperson for Community Safety.
