Bethal branch delivers citrus farmer’s donation of naartjies to retirement homes

On 24 August, AfriForum’s Bethal branch delivered a load of naartjies donated to the branch by Wessel Piso, a citrus farmer from Nelspruit, at the Residentia Palm-Oord retirement home and the Silwerjare Tuiste vir Bejaardes in Bethal.

The branch launched a project three years ago to donate fresh fruit to these homes and Piso contributes to the project every year. The branch sponsors the transport costs of the fruit from Nelspruit to Bethal. This year, Piso donated a load of naartjies to the homes. There was even enough to donate to the homes in Morgenzon as well.

The community garden – a project that the branch also started three years ago and which has grown into an important asset in the community – lived up to its repute once again this week. Almost 100 kg of spinach was donated to the Residentia Palm-Oord retirement home and a further 40 kg to Bethal’s soup kitchen. This comes after last week’s donation of 60 kg of spinach to the Silwerjare Tuiste vir Bejaardes.

“The retirement homes are currently under great financial strain and something like fresh fruit is a luxury due to the rising cost of living. We thank Piso for his donation which makes an enormous difference in the lives of the residents,” says Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Highveld.
