First leg of AfriForum’s challenge of license renewal period concluded in court

The civil rights organisation AfriForum was in the High Court in Pretoria today for the second and last day of its court challenge against the five-year renewal period for driver’s licenses, which is causing so much disfunction.

This court challenge happens within the context of the government’s one and only license printing machine breaking down again for the second time in less than a year, once again causing major delays in the printing of license cards.

AfriForum demanded that, among other things, the court issue a declaratory order stating that the five-year validity period of driving licenses is unconstitutional and that all fines issued for expired licenses are unconstitutional.

According to Ernst van Zyl, Campaign Officer for Strategy and Content at AfriForum, in the past two days in court, AfriForum demonstrated how substantial their case was.

“AfriForum’s legal team exposed major flaws and inconsistencies in the National Road Traffic Act and regulations, in court. The legislation, for example, does not explicitly state that motorists must apply for new license cards upon expiry,” Van Zyl concludes.

Court judgement was reserved.

AfriForum has launched a website where members of the public can add their voices to support this court case: www.nodriversexpiry.co.za.
