Gauteng neighbourhood watches participate in national patrol

AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in Gauteng participated in AfriForum’s national patrol on 14 and 15 April. The patrol was executed in cooperation with various security companies and community members and served to increase visibility across Gauteng.

21 neighbourhood watches in Pretoria, the East Rand and the West Rand took part in the patrol. A total of 354 vehicles, 511 neighbourhood watch members from AfriForum, various security agencies and role players were part of the visibility patrol. 15 658 km were covered, and assistance was provided in 18 incidents. All participants strictly complied with all the required regulations and always acted within the framework of the law.

“AfriForum must be able to continue with visibility patrols to ensure the safety of our communities,” says Dewet Ungerer, acting Safety Specialist and AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Greater Pretoria South area.

During the national patrol, AfriForum’s Edenvale neighbourhood watch arrested two wrongdoers in possession of marijuana while the Bronkhorstspruit neighbourhood watch caught a burglar and handed him over to a local security company, who made the arrest. The Greater Moot and Centurion branches took the opportunity to step up road safety by filling a few potholes before the patrol began.

According to Ungerer good cooperation between different security structures is extremely important in these uncertain times in order to curb crime. “Successes like this can be attributed to the cooperation and effective communication between the community and private security companies. These neighbourhood watches are a good example of what can be achieved if communities stand together and act proactively.”

“AfriForum calls on communities to get involved and prioritise their safety. Get involved with a safety structure in your area or join AfriForum today and become part of the solution,” concludes Ungerer.
