Neighbourhood watches undergo critical training in crime scene management

Two seasoned members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) – Lieutenant Colonel Albert Joubert and Colonel Anton Oosthuizen – earlier this month shared their valuable knowledge and experience regarding the correct handling of crime scenes with neighbourhood watch members and security staff from George. This training equipped course participants with essential basic skills and practical knowledge on this issue. Neighbourhood watch members from AfriForum’s George branch, members of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) and other security organisations have undergone the training and can now tackle the support they offer to the George community even more efficiently.

The course equipped neighbourhood watch, CPF and security members with knowledge about the correct procedure to be followed at any violent crime or accident scene. Among other things, the training pointed to scene cordoning and the correct evidence collection and preservation process.

According to Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape, training of this nature is indispensable for neighbourhood watch members. “Because of neighbourhood watches’ extensive capabilities and quick response time, they are often the first on a crime scene. It is therefore essential that, until the SAPS or similar responsible law enforcement can take over control of the crime scene, they follow the right procedures with regard to its control and preservation,” explains Erasmus.

“We are determined to ensure the safety of George and we will continue to work with the SAPS, CPF and other role players to achieve this goal. Together we are stronger,” says Èduan Naudé, chairperson of AfriForum’s George branch.

“It is encouraging to see how much we can achieve if we work together. AfriForum maintains a culture of cooperation and we will continue to be a reliable partner for the community,” concludes Erasmus.
