Standerton substations now vandal-proof thanks to community intervention

As part of AfriForum’s #OurTown campaign, AfriForum’s Standerton branch has launched a project to secure substations in and around this town with an alarm system. This follows after substations in this area have been repeatedly vandalised during loadshedding for several months.

The Lekwa Local Municipality welcomed AfriForum’s Standerton branch’s initiative and gave permission for the installation of the alarm system. The local security companies – Janson Security and Kasselman Security Services – were respectively charged with the installation and monitoring of the system.

So far, two substations have been secured by means of this alarm system. According to Leon Enslin, chairperson of AfriForum’s Standerton branch, plans are already being made to extend this security to other substations. As soon as funds are available, the expansion will be done, he confirms.

“Standerton has long had problems with vandalism of substations. This criminality also means that the power supply to institutions that must provide essential services is not only faced with loadshedding, but that power supply is even further negatively affected. We cannot simply look on while this vandalism continues. The installation of this alarm system is just one of the ways in which we as a community take ownership of our environment and tackle the problems ourselves, says Enslin.

Residents are requested to support AfriForum’s Standerton branch. Visit www.wordlid.co.za for more information.
