Springs branch serves court papers against NERSA over electricity problems in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality

On 3 August, AfriForum’s Springs branch’s legal team served court papers on the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to resolve the ongoing electricity problems residents of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality face.

This decision was made since Springs and other towns in Ekurhuleni experienced severe and persistent power outages due to poor infrastructure maintenance.

AfriForum served the court papers on NERSA because the municipality does not meet the minimum standards the license provider stipulates in terms of legislation. This came shortly after Eskom took away the implementation of load shedding from the municipality for a week due to irregularities.

“Poor infrastructure maintenance affects large parts of the East Rand, especially areas like Springs and Germiston. Residents must do without power for much longer than the schedule indicates, putting communities and business owners trying to stay afloat under incredible pressure. We approached the court to compel NERSA to launch an investigation and hold the municipality responsible for putting forward a workable and sustainable plan on how the municipality will solve this issue,” says Jurie Ferreira, District Coordinator for the East-Rand.
